📖 The Story Behind This Dish

Laos is one of the world's top consumers of sticky rice, and khao niao is eaten at almost every meal. Sticky rice soaked overnight is steamed in a conical bamboo basket and kept warm in a small bamboo basket called a tip khao. To eat, you roll it into small balls with your fingers and use them to pick up food or dip into sauces.

🌆 Where it's eaten: In a village kitchen early in the morning, steam rises from a pot on the hearth, and the steamed sticky rice is moved to a bamboo basket and offered to monks on their alms round.
